  1. The weather data was obtained from the nearest weather station (Dongducheon, 17 km from the study site, http://www.kma.go.kr/). Degree days were calculated with 10°C threshold because ants rarely begin foraging <10°C (Hölldobler and Wilson 1990). Daily averages (with SE) of temperature were significantly different between years (ANOVA, F 2,36 = 63.8, P << 0.0001), and the different letters following the values indicate significant difference (P < 0.05) between years according to the Fisher LSD multiple comparison test.
